WIPUP 27.06.10a released.
WIPUP 27.06.10a is finally released after almost 3 months of no development due to other priorities. I'm proud to say that it's going to be the final alpha release as most of the originally planned features have been implemented (and a little polish too!) To continue the tradition of quoting statistics (there are lies, damned lies, and statistics) using Git measurements we have a stunning 1,306 source lines of code added, and a shocking 5,115 source lines of code deleted. This gives a net total of 3,809 source lines of code removed. This has been spread over 31 old source files, 9 deleted source files and 5 added source files.
Right - to the features presentation ceremony!
Profile page restructured and polished.
The last update saw the profile page revamped, and we've done it again. There were clear usability issues with the old solution of showing project timelines and so we've decided to shift project timelines to it's own page and instead show the grid view of latest udpates, which is much more presentable and easier to relate to. As said in the last update, we believe this new solution is much more effective to snapshot a users latest works and give that much needed overview.
The new profile page also sees the user information presented in a much more aesthetically pleasing way, which makes use of a new feature for developers to "join" together segments of content in WIPUP. This update can be seen in the first screenshot.
The project page itself, along with the featured update introduced in the last release, was been moved to its own page, which can be seen in the second screenshot.
As usual, my profile is a great demo of these new features.
Aesthetics improved on the updates grid and throughout the site.
This grid view, seen throughout the site has a new lighter and polished layout. We now have a white overlay instead of the black one, embossed fonts, and an information bar to provide a visual separation between rows and provide structure to the page. This information bar in project pages has a 10-star rating system based on the variance from the average views, kudos, and comments a update has received in order to better judge an updates "awesomeness" relative to others.
Aesthetics throughout the site have really been improved, with description boxes sporting slight shading seen in the comments boxes in the previous release, slide into view overlay messages, opacity changes upon hover on the mini thumbnails on the project page, embosses and various other aesthetics changes here and there.
Beautiful new graphs and a slick looking dashboard just for you.
The dashboard, in a sense, has been "completed". It features 2 charts which compresses the rather chaotic display of information previously used via the Google Charts API. This change is discussed in much more detail in this blog post and is quite an interesting read. Notice the new wonderful way that dates are shown in the time graph.
There is a new newsreel showing your notifications in a really fancy way, so it's time to start subscribing and tracking other users to really appreciate this feature. Alongside it a sidebar showing a grid of avatars of your trackers and subscribers can be seen. This feature is shown in screenshot 3.
Updates that you can't write a long paragraph about
- The random update icon (right next to the "add" icon on the top) now works! Use it and discover new fancy projects and updates!
- Charming new sponsor page, check them out.
- Development page added for those interested (in the footer).
- Version page updated (not very interesting).
- Super cool "404 page not found" page added (definitely interesting).
- Viewing by project categories (in the footer) now works! Yay!
Notable Bugfixes
- Updated various avatars for not linking to their respective profiles.
- Fixed bug about non-consistent markup of ul and ol tags in descriptions
- When viewing a random update it now loads the javascript for viewing multiple files properly.
- Compatibility updates for PHP.
- Site works fine in Opera apparently.
Comments and kudos much appreciated, and despite the unfinished state we'd like to start inviting alpha testers so if you're interested in checking out how practical this system is go sign up and tell me how it is. Potential developers may be interested in the source, hosted on GitHub, and IRC lurkers may want to add #eadrax to their lurk list on Freenode. This is hopefully the last alpha updates and we'll move into beta soon!
